ABOUT APIS AUSTRALIA

Using honey to treat horses wounds

APIS Australia is a proudly Western Australian family-owned business and the manufacturer of Wound Wax.

The name APIS not only refers to the genus Apis, the only class of insect able to produce honey and construct nests from wax, it’s also an acronym for ‘Animal Products with Innovative Solutions’.

Although honey has been used to treat horses’ wounds for centuries, Wound Wax makes it available in an easy-to-use salve without all the mess.

CREATED BY AN EQUINE VET

APIS founder Dr Thomas Hamilton is a Perth-based Equine Vet who created Wound Wax for horse and dog owners to treat simple, superficial wounds and grazes using the gentle healing power of honey, without all the mess.

ALLOWING THE BODY TO HEAL NATURALLY

Working horses in particular are susceptible to cuts, grazes and minor wounds that don’t require veterinary attention but do benefit from correct management to promote healing and reduce scarring.

Unlike many prescription-only products, Wound Wax contains no ingredients that would be prohibited in a swab test, making it safe to use at any time.

DO YOU KNOW

THE PRINCIPLES OF WOUND MANAGEMENT?

Two things to keep in mind when caring for simple, superficial wounds:

1. Don’t use disinfectants on wounds. We don’t want to kill cells; we want to encourage them to live and multiply.

2. Keep wounds moist. Cuts and grazes heal more quickly and with less scarring with a moist wound bed.
